What’s in Gothenburg?

Today we kicked off our day with breakfast at our hostel. We weren’t meeting until 10:45 am so people had some time to get ready and take our time at breakfast. There was a variety of fresh baked bread that the hostel has delivered every morning from a local bakery, cheese, deli meat, fruit and jams. We then headed our on a group bus tour.

Our first stop was the “Fish Church”. It’s a fish market that has been nicknamed the Fish Church because of the style of architecture. There was a variety of fish and other seafood options as well as three different restaurants within. Our tour guide informed us that there have even been weddings hosted there, they seemed to have ignored the smell.

Right outside of the fish church was a part of the original wall that surrounded Gothenburg to avoid invasion. The wall use to surround the entire city and now it serves as a reminder of Gothenburg’s history. After the fish church we headed to the Goteborg Museum which is right at the end of the famous Avenyn tourist attraction. Avenyn is Gothenburg’s parade street and is home to multiple shops, restaurants and clubs. Our tour guide compared it to the Champs-Elysees in Paris. It was full of beautiful architecture and I am definitely excited to go back and see what different shops there are.

From there we headed towards the Christinae Church also known as the German Church. This church has one part that still remains from the 1700’s. It is where a very famous general is also buried alongside his wife and 20 children. Right outside the church around the corner is the Kronhuset Ochoas kronhusbodarna which was used for military storage in the 17th century. It is no longer used very much to preserve it but every year the city puts on a Christmas market. There are other smaller shops around it and one that sells wonderful chocolate.

We ended the tour at cafe Husaren in Haga. We tried the famous cinnamon rolls that are as big as a plate and had a coffee break before breaking out and going our separate ways for the day. Jenna tried the lemon bar and I had a chocolate cupcake. The desserts were delicious and the coffee was just the thing we needed to continue our day.
